Are rural residents’ mental health influenced by the new countryside construction? An investigation in Chongqing, China
The Chinese government launched the “New Countryside Construction” (NCC) programme in the mid-2000s to improve the living conditions in rural regions. This paper analyses the effect of the implementation of NCC on the mental health of rural residents in 10 villages in Chongqing, southwest China. Findings revealed that the resultant infrastructure development and new housing opportunities yielded under the NCC scheme significantly improved the mental health of rural residents.
